The attraction cautions visitors that its location in Spring Green is rural, and therefore cell phone service may be limited in the area. Jordan was a collector all his life and enjoyed visiting museums; however, he did not want The House on the Rock to be a museum. Though parts of the collections could have easily found their way into museums, The House on the Rock is more of a trip through the wild and fantastic imagination of Alex Jordan than a visit to a dusty museum. During the 1940s, a man named Alex Jordan saw a 60-foot chimney of rock in beautiful Wisconsin. It was here that he decided to build a house on the sandstone formation called Deer Shelter Rock. The Stahl House was declared Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #670 in 1999.

Visiting the grounds of this beautiful mansion is a favorite of both locals and tourists. It is free to visit the grounds though occasionally the opportunity will become available to tour the inside for a fee. You can read about my visit here in my post on Greystone Mansion. There are so many incredible famous houses in Los Angeles.

According to the series, the Charmed house was built in 1898, which may be close, according to a historic plaque mounted across the street. One of the world’s largest collections of miniature doll houses with styles from Colonial to Victorian, each with meticulous, handcrafted details. Some of what there is to see are not collections, but one-of-a-kind creations. Chandeliers Jordan designed and had built are made up of dozens of smaller chandeliers.

An exotic and eclectic creation of collections, displays, and galleries, House on the Rock is a dazzling retreat built in 1960 by Alex Jordan atop a chimney of rock in scenic Southern Wisconsin. It is recommended to budget 3.5 hours to visit the House on the Rock. The house is divided into three sections; the first section takes about 45 minutes, section two can take a solid two hours, and section three can take another one or two hours. In 1960, Alex Jordan opened his dream house built atop a chimney of rock to the public. Over the years, Alex expanded his vision beyond the House and collected and built on a massive scale. What began as a lofty retreat with an awe-inspiring view has become a spectacular attraction known as The House on the Rock.

The three-story house and its furnishings were designed by Charles and Henry Greene in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company. Today, the house is owned by the City of Pasadena and operated by the University of Southern California School of Architecture. Two fifth-year USC architecture students live in the house full-time; the resident students change every year. The Mad Men house is actually walking distance from the Father Of The Bride house. The Father Of The Bride House is one of my favorites because it looks like such a perfect family home. There are actually two homes that you can visit that were used in the movie. Can’t you just picture Franck and his team adding all of the finishing touches for the wedding reception? You can also visit the home used for the basketball scenes in Alhambra.

This is Doc Brown’s house in the Back to the Future trilogy. In the scenes taking place in 1985, the mansion no longer exists and Doc lives in his garage/laboratory which in real life is the carriage house turned giftshop. A walk through the Infinity Room extending an astonishing 218 feet, leads to awe-inspiring views of the valley below. The Gamble House in Pasadena is widely regarded as a masterpiece of the Arts and Crafts style.

I recently had the opportunity to see the inside of the home when it went on sale as it turns out that I knew the realtor. I wasn’t feeling well the day I was supposed to go so I had to pass on the experience. I know it doesn’t look like the set but getting to go inside such an iconic house is a rare chance.
